Nation of heathens invade NJ

nothing like a quick roadtrip with an old friend to catch some live music.

friday july 19 marked a day that ive been looking forward to for a long time. a chance to catch valley of the sun live and in person. valley of the sun are supporting heavy temple on their nation of heathens tour which has the two bands melting faces from now thru september.

this trip also served as an OPPORTUNITY to catch up with an old friend. people we make music with have ways of drifting in and out of our lives it seems. this person in particular is one of the most talented drummers ive played with, i was relishing for a chance to talk at length and see where his head was at these days.

now i was trying to remember when i started listening to heavy temple, and think it was at some point just before the new album dropped. i seem to remember pulling up their page one day and seeing the new album, Garden of Heathens, pop up with one of the singles available. with the rest tantalizingly grayed out for later release. when the music’s good and the album shows up like that, sometimes its just too much for me. HA, patience. anyway, garden of heathens dropped back in april and its fantastic. lets be honest, sometimes you put on a record and its good but somehow it just feels like a collection of songs. this isn’t that, this is well put together. this has got flow and structure. a+

their live performance did not DISAPPOINT. playing a mix of tracks from their two albums, the trio were EMBODYING rock n roll. some early tour sickness couldn’t even thwart their show. High Priestess nighthawk provided the low end and vocal powers from deep within to push through.

seeing valley of the sun as a three piece was a surprise. and it was beyond impressive. with huge guitar and bass tones. they too played a mix of song old and new, but it was a real treat to hear a few off the forthcoming album Quintessence, ….of witch a few songs are available early on their Bandcamp page.

seeing songs like old gods and firewalker performed live with such energy was a true treat. can confirm it kicked ass.
